Behind the production of the enameled cast iron casserole

A good cast iron casserole is not just about what you cook in it, but also how it is made.

We wanted to create an enameled cast iron casserole that combines function and tradition – and that you will never need to replace.

But that requires craftsmanship that matches the ambition.

From recycled iron to kitchen classic

Production takes place in northern France – an area known for both its culinary heritage and high standards of craftsmanship.

Here, since the 1920s, the foundry has refined the art of casting and enamelling cast iron.

Our new cast iron casserole is based on this historical experience, with several steps in the production process still carried out by hand.

Each pot is not only created with the highest quality in mind, but also with a focus on the environment:

Up to 80% of the raw material consists of recycled iron, which is given new life by being mixed in just the right proportions and melted down into new cast iron casseroles with incredible heat properties.

Individual sand moulds

Each casserole is cast in its own unique sand mould, which is pressed and used only once.

Once the cast iron has been melted, it is carefully poured into the mould, where it cools.

The sand mould is then destroyed and the sand is reused for new moulds.

Once the raw casserole is cast, it is sanded and sandblasted to create a smooth surface without sharp or uneven edges.

This is an essential part of the process, ensuring that the enamel can later bond and create a smooth, durable finish.

Hand enamelling

The quality of the enamel is what really distinguishes a good cast iron casserole from a bad one.

Poor quality enamel is more fragile, so it does not last very long.

And once the enamel has broken, unfortunately there is nothing that can be done.

That is why it has been important for us to ensure that the enamel is of the highest quality.

Instead of machine production, the enamel is applied by hand by experienced experts.

Each casserole receives two or three layers, depending on the colour.

The casserole is then fired at around 800 °C, where the layers melt together.

This creates a durable glass enamel – also known as porcelain enamel – which protects the cast iron from rust and acid and provides a smooth, easy-to-clean surface.

It is this process that makes the casserole beautiful, durable and resistant – completely free of PFAS and heavy metals.

French soul, Danish design

While the craftsmanship is French, the design was developed in Denmark.

The shape is simple, timeless and functional, and the colours have been carefully selected so that the casserole can both adorn the dinner table and stand out in the kitchen as part of the décor.

Every detail has been carefully thought out – from the heat-resistant stainless steel knob with an ergonomic shape to the tight-fitting lid with condensation grooves that ensures even moisture in the casserole during cooking.
